Attendance Incentives!
Attendance initiatives at JM -
"BROWNS Attendance Challenge"
How it Works:
-
Classes in each grade will compete to have the highest attendance percentage each week.
-
Each week, the class in each grade with the highest attendance will:
-
Earn a letter to spell "BROWNS" (supporting our Cleveland Browns!).
-
Receive a Browns Poster to display outside their classroom proudly.
-
Get to hold the Football Trophy in their classroom for the entire week!
-
-
The first class in each grade to spell BROWNS will win an exciting Ice Cream or Donut Party!
Details:
-
The competition will be based on weekly attendance percentages.
-
The challenge continues until one class in each grade spells BROWNS by earning all six letters.
-
Weekly winners will be recognized during morning announcements and have their progress displayed on a school-wide board.
The 200 Club: Each day, during the morning announcements, we will randomly select 10 student names.
-
If the student is sitting at their desk and ready to learn, they can come to the office to be celebrated!
-
These students will receive a 200 Club Sticker and card and will then get to choose a spot on our 200 Club post to write their name.
Once the 200 Grid is filled, all members will enjoy a special celebration with Mrs. McKim!
PBIS Information and Awards
What is PBIS
At John Muir PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports) is a program designed to teach respect, responsibility and readiness at school. We hope to encourage students to continuously make good behavioral choices by implementing PBIS.
PBIS provides teachers and other school staff with information to help prevent behavior problems and to help make school a safe learning environment. The ultimate outcome of PBIS is to support all students, staff, and families/caregivers to have the most successful educational experience. This involves promoting social, emotional, behavioral, and academic growth.
How PBIS Works - All students & staff are taught the school-wide expectations. Students receive frequent reviews of expectations and are acknowledged when they demonstrate positive behaviors. Staff uses data to help identify students who need additional support.
-
Tier 1 establishes universal, proactive support and prevention to all students school-wide.
-
Tier 2 supports focus on students who are at-risk for developing non-preferred behaviors with a focus on skill development.
-
Tier 3 students receive more intensive, individualized support to improve their behavioral and academic outcomes.
In addition to teaching (and reteaching) desired behaviors, a key component of PBIS is recognizing students who are following the school rules. There are so many students who come to John Muir every day and do exactly what is expected of them. We celebrate these students with our blue Viking Treasure Tickets. All students have an opportunity to earn blue Viking Treasure Tickets by being Respectful, Responsible and Ready and meeting our school expectations. Each week using students' treasure tickets we select our Victorious Vikings of the Week. Victorious Vikings are announced during the morning announcements and winning students get to select a treasure from our Treasure Chest. We also have quarterly incentives where we celebrate students who were referral free for the quarter with various different things including school-wide game of Bingo, dance party, etc.
Ways to support PBIS
Parents can help by reading and discussing the Behavior Expectations Matrix that we have below on a regular basis with their students.
- Ask your student about our Three R's - Respectful, Responsible and Ready
- Require your child to speak respectfully to others, especially adults.
- If your child has a problem in school, review with them the Behavior Expectations Matrix and discuss other possible choices or solutions.
2nd Quarter PBIS Incentive
We will be hosting a PBIS Glow Dance Party as our 2nd Quarter Incentive. To get invited to our Glow Dance Party students will need to earn 50 Blue Treasure Tickets. Students can earn Blue Treasure Tickets by meeting our school expectations of being Respectful, Responsible, and Ready. Please take a moment to review the Behavior Expectations Matrix with your child to reinforce how they can earn their Blue Treasure Tickets. Students need to collect 50 Blue Tickets between November 11th and January 19th to attend. Students and Teachers will track progress, and we’ll celebrate our successful students with a fun, energetic dance party.
The Glow Dance Party will be held on Friday, January 31st:
- K-2nd Grade: 12:30-1:00 pm
- 3rd-4th Grade: 3:00-3:30

Family Winter Tradition Ornament
We invite you to spend some time together to create an ornament that represents your family's winter holiday tradition. Please return the completed ornament to school by December 6th. All returned ornaments will be used to decorate our bulletin boards as we celebrate the diverse traditions of our John Muir family.
